There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from nearby Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is prohibited. Eight gambling dens are based in a relatively tiny area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent area, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a few controls requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; although, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 1700, and though visas are allegedly needed to cross, there are ways around this, as is accurate of many borders.
The first Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary ship casino, contains 150 slot machines and 60 table games. The Naga gambling hall is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slots and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the common gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive vacation and hotel compound that highlights a number of amenities in addition to the gambling hall, which provides 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and eighty eight table games.
